Meditation in Thailand – Wat U Mong, Chiang Mai

Wat Umong is one of the famous place for meditation in Thailand. It is also oldest temples to Chiang Mai, built in the late 14^th century. It is at the rear of Chiang Mai University in the foothills of Doi Suthep. This 60 acres meditationi centre is famous for its ancient tunnel and large stupa as well as the serene and peaceful.  Under large stupa are ancient tunnel that connect another side of stupa. Most of area of temple is green and peaceful with big trees. There is small pond for feeding fish in another side of temple. This place is perfect to meditate by blending yourself with peaceful environment.

How is the meditation in Thailand?

This temple offer meditation retreat based on Anapanasati, where one is free to practice by their own mediation technique. Self motivation is very important because most part, discipline, practice and schedule depending on each person.

Teachers are normally available for question in English in every Sunday from15.00 – 18.00 hrs. Some senior monk can speak a little English, it is advisable to be able to speak some Thai

How to get there ?

There are many option to arrive in Chiang Mai

By Air: Chiang Mai is center city of North of Thailand. There are many airline fly directly to chiang mai from

Bangkok Airport ( Both Suwannabhumi airport and Don Muang airport). The flight take about 1 hour from Bangkok.

Air Asia, Nok Air, and Orient Thai are budget airline that offer regular flight to Chiang Mai.

By Train: Chiang Mai have direct train from Huay Lam Pong , Bangkok Central station. The train took approximately 10 hours to arrive there. Sleeping train with second class is recommended to inactive with local people on the train and very comfortable.  It leave bangkok about 20.00 hrs at night and arrive in Chiang Mai in early morning.

By Bus: There are many direct bus to chiang mai too. It will take similar hour like train.

The Naga and Thai belief

The Naga or the big snake is one of Main belief of People in South Asia or South East Asia. It represents the good fortune, the greatness and the ladder to the universe. That’s why you will see them in many stairs in temple in Southeast Asia, especially Thailand.

Thai adopt the Belief of Naga from India. In Mahabharata, Naga is positive and play important roles in epic. In Buddhist, Naga is protector of the Buddha, when he meditated in the forest shortly after his enlighten. The great storm arises, Naga King called Mucalinda, cover the Buddha’s head with his 7 snakes head gave shelter during the storm.

Moreover, the legend of the Nāga is a strong and sacred belief held by Thai and Lao people living along the Mekong River. Many pay their respects to the river because they believe the Nāga still rule in it, and locals hold an annual sacrifice for the Nāga. Each ceremony depends on how each village earns its living from the Mekong River — for instance, through fishing or transport. Local residents believe that the Nāga can protect them from danger, so they are likely to make a sacrifice to Nāga before taking a boat trip along the Mekong River.

Also, every year on the night of 15th day of 11th month in the Lao lunar calendar at the end of Vassa, an unusual phenomenon occurs in the area of the Mekong River stretching over 20 kilometres between Pak-Ngeum and Phonephisai districts in Nong Khai province, Thailand. Fireballs appear to rise from the river into the nighttime sky. Local villagers believe that Nāga under Mekong River shoot the fireballs into the air to celebrate the end of Vassa, because Nāga meditate during this time. That’s why many people are waiting to be part of that miracle.

As we know that right now many countries got 1 month permission to stay in Thailand without visa, including Italian. If you stay more 1 month permission, the police wont stop and hunt for you but they will charge you in cash before you leave country THB 500 per day and maximum at THB 20,000.


Why not you have to pay extra if you get more opportunity to explore different part of Thailand. This time we will go to Ranong. Ranong is first province to South of Thailand and have border to Myanmar  It is about 6 – 7 hours from Bangkok or about 532.2 km.

This time we drive from Hua Hin to Ranong, it took about 5 – 6 hours from Hua Hin because we stop for tasting the local food on the way  We arrive in Ranong about 5 and stayed in lovely hotel in Ranong town. We heard that Ranong is quite good for hotspring, so we will try before tomorrow visa run.
We stay in Thansila Hotspring resort, which is few minutes walk from hot spring.  We booked the river view this time and the room is nice and comfortable with warm water.

 The Owner is nice, friendly and ready to answer all tips for activity and food in that area. We just open window and see river next to our room. We changed our cloth and pack , ready for the hotspring. Luckyily it open until 21.00 hrs, but the best time is about 16.30 – 18.30 hrs because the sun is not too hot.

 It is outdoor hotspring with everyone can get fun. The entrance fee is only THB 40 per person with Towel, locker room and outdoor shower. It is perfect for holiday After relaxing in hotspring, you can enjoy between spa massage and eating or you can have both like us

Such a long day, tomorrow is time for Visa Run. Our reception recommend us to go to Anadaman Club, which took only 15 minutes by car or most of hotel got special offer for private transportation.



Anadaman Club is resort in Myarmar that offer Visa run in easy way and gave possibility to enjoy gaming in Myarmmar . When we arrive in the pier, the receptionist will introduce herself and inform us how to do visa run. Just simply fill to immigration  form. They will inform us the time of  boat leaving.

The boat is quite comfortable with air-con and our fellow for visa run. In the pier, they will show how much alchoo or cigraratte that you can bring back to Thai kingdom. The boat ride took about 20 minutes and arrive in Andaman private pier. Simply stamp passport and took next boat back to Thailand or enjoy playing game and hotel facility. The last boat is about 20.00 hrs.

Note: Do not forget to check the visa before leaving custom, sometimes crossing the border by foot, you will get less day than you arrive by plane  such as Italian got 30 days visa by crossing by plane but only 14 days by ground

Khao Takiab or เขาตะเกียบ in Thai is small hill on the south of Hua Hin near by coastline . " Khao" mean Hill and "Takiab" mean chopstick. So Khao takiab mean chopstick hill. We still don't know who name this Chopstick Hill. It is about 14 Km from Hua Hin Downtown or 10 mins by car ! ;)

Khao Takiab o in lingua Thai เขาตะเกียบ, è una piccola collina che si trova a sud di Hua Hin vicino al lungomare. "Khao" significa collina e "Takiab" sono i bastoncini che usano gli orientali per mangiare. Quindi il nome completo è collina dei bastoncini, tutt'ora non si conosce chi o in quale periodo storico, venne dato il nome alla collina. Dista circa 14 Km da Hua Hin Downtown o 10 minuti di macchina! ;)

Even Khao Takiab is small hill, there are many interesting places to visit in order to see great view of Hua Hin gulf. ;)

Anche se Khao Takiab è una piccola collina, non mancano posti interessanti da visitare e viste del golfo di Hua Hin mozzafiato. ;)

One of the most important attraction is Wat Khao Takiab or Khao Takiab temple. Wat Khao Takiab located on the top of the hill and need bit exercise to arrive, about 250 meter. Ok, let's go!

Una delle più importanti attrazioni è il Tempio di Khao Takiab. Situato in cima all'omonima collina, per raggiungerlo bisogna fare un po' di esercizio fisico, sono circa 250 metri. Ok, partiamo!

Zebra almost forgot .... before you go, do not forget to buy flowers, incenses and candles with you for respecting Buddha tooth. Today zebra choose the orchid with Pandan leave, one of my favorite flower. ;) The flower for Buddha has to be fresh , nice smell, and nice color. Some Buddhist believed that the choice of flower will reflect how we look like in next life. If we choose pretty one, we will look good too, who know, i will choose the best anyway!

Per poco la Zebra non si dimentica... prima di partire, ricordatevi di portare con voi fiori, incensi e candele in rispetto al dente di Buddha. Oggi ho scelto le orchidee avvolte in foglie di Pandan, una delle mie composizioni preferite. ;) Il fiore che portate a Buddha deve essere fresco, avere un buon odore ed essere di colore brillante. Alcuni buddisti credono che la scelta del fiore che portiamo, rifletterà come appariremo nella prossima vita. Se lo scegliamo bello appariremo belli anche noi, chi lo sa... io scelgo il più bello comunque!

Pandan leave is very popular plant in South east asia. The shape is slim and tall and we normally put it in the food or dessert because of nice smell. If you find some green dessert in Thailand, it wont be Pistachio for sure. One more important thing is, even the flowers smell nice, DON'T try to smell it because we have to keep the best for Buddha.

Le foglie di Pandan sono molto popolari nel Sudest asiatico. La forma è sottile ed allungata e normalmente viene usata per cucinare visto il suo buon aroma. Se provate un dessert color verde, non sarà sicuramente pistacchio. Un ultimo avviso molto importante, anche se i fiori hanno un buon profumo, NON annusateli, perchè devono trattenere la loro migliore fragranza per Buddha.

Ok so let's go to the top of Hill.. On the top , there is small chapel that surrounded by the bells. These bell are made of brass. When you already pay respect to Buddha, we will ring the bell and let him know or tell other people that we are doing the great thing.

Ok partiamo per la cima della collina. Appena arriva si vedono piccoli capitelli circondati da decine e decine di campane di bronzo. Dopo la preghiera i fedeli suonano queste campane per far sapre a Buddha e a tutti gli altri cittadini che stanno facendo una buona azione.

And then the highlight of  this attraction is view of Hua Hin gulf.

Ed ora focalizziamo l'attenzione sull'attrazione migliore... il golfo di Hua Hin.

Let's go down and see another interesting of Khao Takiab. Do you know that Khao takiab also has nickname as "Khao Ling". " Khao" mean hill and "Ling" mean monkey. So what you will see when you arrive in Khao Takiab is gang of monkey. Here people are allowed to give food to monkey but only in limited area because the monkey can become aggressive with tourist when they are hungry.
Ora scendiamo e andiamo a scoprire cosa c'è ai piedi di Khao Takiab, sapevate che viene anche chiamato Khao Ling cioè collina delle scimmie? Una gang di scimmie vi da il benvenuto alle pendici del tempio e solo in quest'area è possibile dare da mangiare a questi animali che solitamente non sono aggressivi con i turisti.

On other side of the hill, it locate the house of "Pak Khong" , Chinese God who will protect and make the land peaceful. He will protect the local people from danger and in the small sala of the top, you will find the footprint of Buddha. Here you wont allow to take picture. Dont forget to bring flower and gold sheet! ;)

In un'altra parete della collina è situata la casa di "Pak Khong", questo Dio cinese protegge e rende pacifiche le terre, protegge i cittadini dai pericoli e in una piccola sala in cima si stova una impronta di piede di Buddha. Qui è possibile fare alcune foto, ma non dimenticatevi di portare i fiori e i fogliettini dorati da attaccare sulla statua! ;)

As i told you at first, even Khao Takiab is small hill but there are many attraction like Chinese temple, fisherman village and very fresh seafood place with reasonable price.

Come vi ho detto prima, anche se Khao Takiab è una piccola collina, essa possiede molte attrazioni come il tempio cinese, il villaggio dei pescatori e ristoranti di pesce con una buon rapporto qualità/prezzo.

Come posso arrivarci?

Khao Takiab is about 12 Km from Hua Hin downtown.

By car: It will take about 10 minutes from Hua hin downtown.

Automobile: circa 10 minuti dalla città.

Songtaew

By Public transportation:  Green truck or known as Songtaew. The fee is only THB 10 from Hua hin downtown to Khao Takiab area. Simply flag one down, if you find them on the way and get on. You can get on and off during the journey and don't forget to pay with driver before you leave. :)
Trasporto Pubblico: queste specie di taxy verdi conosciuti come Songtaew costano solo THB 10 (circa €0,25) e partono dal centro città fino all'area del tempio Khao Takiab. Semplicemente fate segno al conducente che volete salire, chiedete di scendere quando volete (non ci sono feramte specifiche) e non dimenticate di pagare l'autista prima di andarvene. :)

Another option is Tuk Tuk. Tuk Tuk is still one of the most famous transportation in Thailand. However Zebra wont recommend because most of them are overcharge. Sometimes, the price is up to THB 250 for short minutes ride.
Un'altra possibile opzione sono i Tuk Tuk, simili all'Ape Piaggio, sono motorini a 3 ruote che sfrecciano nel traffico per arrivare a destinazione il più velocemente possibile. Comunque Zebra non ve lo raccomanda perchè molti autisti chiedono tariffe maggiorate. Qualche volta il prezzo può salire fino a THB 250 (pari a €6,00 circa) per una corsa di pochi minuti.

CONSIGLI  PER  PRENOTARE  VOLI  AEREI  ON  LINE

La cosa che di solito spaventa maggiormente i miei amici e conoscenti quando si parla di Thailandia è il prezzo oneroso del biglietto aereo. Nessuno ha idea di quale potrebbe essere il prezzo medio e tutti temono di spendere più per l'aereo che per fare una vacanza in un posto vicino a casa... NON E' VERO!!! L'altro giorno sono riuscito a trovre un volo per la Thailandia per soli  € 469 e se si considera il basso costo della vita e la possibilià di trovare ostelli anche per € 4 per notte (non scherzo ho ancora la ricevuta!!!! :D ), il rapporto qualità / prezzo / divertimento / esperienza / .... non ha paragoni!

Scrivo questo post per spiegare brevemente quali sono i passaggi base per prenotare a basso costo un biglietto aereo in internet e quali sono i siti italiani che al momento offrono le offerte più vantaggiose. Naturalmente lo stile di viaggio e il relativo costo del biglietto dipendono da te, i voli diretti per esempio sono più costosi di un volo che fa uno scalo di qualche ora (naturalmente per qualche decina di euro di differenza non vale la pena fare uno scalo di 12 ore se ci sono migliori soluzioni). Detto ciò raccomando comunque ATTENZIONE alcune compagnie aeree sono abbastanza truffaldine e tendono a inserirti nel prezzo del biglietto assicurazioni di ogni genere, extra e servizi, controlla bene e leggi tutto (soprattutto i totali) prima di confermare, soprattutto se vuoi ottenere un prezzo stringato.

• Controlla per prima cosa i siti di offerte low cost, non limitarti a uno solo, spesso non tutti hanno le stesse offerte. Di seguito troverete una lista di siti che ritengo molto buoni:

• Se stai andando in Thailandia per esempio, dai un'occhiata anche alle compagnie aereee tailandesi, magari hanno una qualche offerta speciale per il tuo periodo. Per trovare le compagnie aeree di un paese basta fare una semplice ricerca su google.

• http://www.airasia.com/my/en/home.page
• Se ne hai la possibilità non limitardi a giorni precisi ma guarda un intervallo di 2 o 3 giorni attorno alla tua data, il fine settimana e nei giorni festivi i prezzi tendono ad aumentare un pochino.
• Tieni controllati i prezzi dei voli da qualche mese prima della partenza, se aspetti l'ultimo minuto per prenotare, difficilemente troverai buone occasioni.
• Leggi bene che cosa richiede la compagnia prima di acquistare il biglietto, alcune compagnie come la Rayan air richiedono il Check-In on line, se non lo si fa si incorre a penali anche di centinaia di euro per passeggero. I pesi dei bagagli possono variare, come anche le tipologie, la Turkish airline garantisce il trasporto gratuito dell'attrezzatura da golf e da sci.

• Il metodo di pagamento va a discrezione di chi compra il biglietto, io personalmente non ho mai avuto problemi a pagare con la carta di credito o paypal. Ovviamente prima si prenota il biglietto e prima si evitano gli incrementi di prezzo e il perdita della precenza acquisita, assicurandosi il prezzo vantaggioso che abbiamo trovato.
 

Penso sia tutto per stasera, anche io come la mia Zebra faccio le ore piccole davanti al computer, ma se avete domande o volete saperne di più non esitate a chiedere! ;)

Hua Hin is the town located in Prachuap Khiri Kham and very easy to access from Bangkok.

Hua Hin è situata nella regione di Prachuap Khiri Kham ed è connessa direttamente con Bangkok.

• By car : approximately 2 hours from Bangkok, depending on traffic, of course ;)

  Autobus: ci sono molti autobus che passano da Hua Hin per proseguire verso il sud della Thailandia.

Hua Hin's name came from group of farmer who moved south and arrived at a village that had white beach and some rocks. So Hua Hin got its name from rows of rock.

Il nome di Hua Hin deriva da un gruppo di contadini, i quali stabilitisi a sud e arrivarono ad un villaggio che aveva spiagge bianche e alcuni sassi particolari, dai quali la città ha preso il nome.

After Prince Purachatra built the railway hotel close to the beach in 1921, King Prajadhipok (Rama 7) decided to build summer palace known as Wang Klai Kang Won ( Far from Worries) , which is same resident of our king ( Rama 9). Since that time, many Thai people go to Hua Hin for weekend because of short distance from Bangok.

Dopo che il principe Purachatra costruì l'hotel della stazione dei treni, vicino alla spiaggia nel 1921, il re Prajadhipok (Rama 7) decise di costrure un palazzo reale estivo conosciuto come Wang Klai Kang Won. Da allora molti tailandesi vanno a Hua Hin per trascorrere i fine settimana e le vacanze, proprio per la sua vicinanza a Bangkok e il loro attaccamento alla vita reale.

People can enjoy nice and sandy beach of Hua Hin gulf, swimming and sunbathing. One of another activity for kids is riding the horses along the beach.

Turisti e tailandesi si godono le bellissime spiaggie bianche del golfo di Hua Hin, facendo il bagno o prendendo il sole. Una delle possibili attivià divertenti per i bambini è cavalcare un cavallo lungo il bagnasciuga.

Hua Hin is famous for Night Market. Famous Hua Hin market is one of the must do in Hua Hin. Estimaed 1 km of walk in Hua Hin download is full of street food, seafood restaurant, shopping, and souvenir. 

Il Mercato Notturno è senz'altro il posto più famoso a Hua Hin, assolutamente da visitare. Lungo circa 1 km è pieno zeppo di ristoranti, bancarelle di suvenir e shopping in generale.

Ciao Ciao e Sawasdee Krap a tutti,
io sono il Donkey, asinello italiano, ho conosciuto la mia Zebra un paio di anni fa su una bellissima spiaggia tailandese e da allora abbiamo cominciato a viaggiare per l'asia in cerca di posti unici in grado di farci evadere dalla solita rutine.

Questa è la spiaggia che ci ha fatto conoscere, 11 km di spiaggia incontaminata, su un'isola riconosciuta come parco naturale per via delle tartarughe marine che vengono a depositare le uova per tutto il periodo invernale.
